COPENHAGEN — Denmark's capital has retained its position as the world's most livable city for the second consecutive year, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) Global Liveability Index 2026, which evaluates 173 cities based on stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
Joining Copenhagen in the top five are Vienna, Melbourne, Sydney, and Zurich, reflecting the continued dominance of European cities and Australia's strong performance in global quality-of-life rankings.
The annual index measures how well cities provide residents with safe, healthy, and sustainable living conditions. While each city excels in different areas, they all share common strengths, including reliable public services, modern infrastructure, high-quality healthcare, and a strong emphasis on public safety.
Copenhagen secured top marks for stability, education, and infrastructure. Residents praise its cycling culture, clean waterways, and compact urban design, which make commuting and outdoor recreation part of everyday life.
Vienna, ranked second, continues to earn high scores for healthcare and education. Efficient public transportation, walkable neighborhoods, and the city's rich architectural and cultural heritage contribute to its consistently high quality of life.\
Melbourne claimed third place, standing out for its vibrant arts scene, multicultural communities, and diverse neighborhoods. Residents say the city's blend of culture, dining, music, and community spirit gives it a unique identity.
Sydney, in fourth place, combines world-class healthcare and education with easy access to beaches, national parks, and outdoor lifestyles. Its multicultural population and globally recognized food scene are also considered major attractions.
Rounding out the top five, Zurich is praised for its exceptional cleanliness, efficient public services, and close connection to nature. The city's pristine lakes, rivers, and abundant public drinking fountains contribute to what many residents describe as an outstanding quality of life.
