Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the French ambassador to Tehran following accusations that France interfered in Iran’s internal affairs.
A spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that the French ambassador was called in for a meeting on Wednesday. Explaining the decision, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei accused France of using diplomatic activities as a pretext to interfere in Iran’s domestic affairs.
“France has interfered in internal matters under the excuse of embassy activities and relations with civil society, and it should apologize,” Baghaei said.
The diplomatic dispute follows comments made last week by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, who accused Iranian security forces of violating the diplomatic immunity of two French embassy employees in Tehran.
Barrot said on X (formerly Twitter) that the two employees were detained and questioned for several hours without justification, adding that one of them was allegedly subjected to physical mistreatment.
Following the incident, France’s Foreign Ministry summoned Iran’s diplomatic representative in Paris to express its concerns.
The latest dispute has increased tensions between Tehran and Paris, with both countries exchanging accusations over diplomatic conduct and the treatment of embassy personnel.
