SANA'A, Yemen — Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi movement has claimed responsibility for shooting down a Turkish-made Bayraktar Akıncı unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that it says was being operated by Saudi Arabia during military operations in Yemen's Al-Jawf province.
In a statement published on the social media platform X, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the drone was brought down using what he described as an "appropriate weapon." He alleged that the aircraft had been conducting what he called "hostile aerial operations" over the region.
The Houthis stated that they would continue responding to what they described as violations of Yemen's sovereignty, adding that their forces possess the capability to confront aerial threats.
The claim comes a day after the Houthis announced they had launched attacks targeting Saudi Aramco oil facilities and the Yanbu oil production complex in Saudi Arabia, describing the strikes as part of their ongoing military campaign.
Saudi Arabian authorities had not immediately commented on the Houthis' latest claims, and there has been no independent verification that the drone was shot down.
The reported incident highlights the continuing security challenges in the region, where cross-border attacks and military operations have intensified amid broader tensions involving Iran, Saudi Arabia, and their regional allies.
