Second Vessel Hijacked off Somali Coast
Piracy has once again resurfaced off the coast of Somalia, with armed groups hijacking a second vessel in recent days, raising fresh concerns over maritime security in the region.
According to maritime monitoring agencies, the latest incident involved a commercial cargo ship that was seized by unidentified armed men and redirected toward the coastal town of Garacad. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed that “unauthorized persons” had taken control of the vessel.
At least four vessels have faced attempted hijackings in the past week alone, including a fishing boat and an oil tanker. These incidents mark a worrying resurgence of piracy in waters where such activity had significantly declined over the past three years.
Authorities in Puntland have vowed to respond with military action. Officials say operations are being planned to dismantle pirate networks and secure vital shipping routes.
Puntland Launches Response After Oil Tanker Seized
In a related incident, an oil tanker named Honour 25 was captured by six armed men approximately 30 nautical miles off the Somali coast. The vessel carried 17 crew members from multiple countries, including Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar.
Puntland officials have pledged decisive action. A senior government minister stated that security forces would carry out operations to bring those responsible to justice, emphasizing that piracy will not be tolerated.
South West State Elections Postponed
Meanwhile, political developments are unfolding within Somalia. Elections scheduled in South West State have been postponed following complaints from participating political organizations.
The National Independent Electoral Commission announced that candidate registration has been extended until May 5, 2026, with elections now expected to take place on May 10. The vote is intended to be a one-person, one-vote election for local councils.
Iran Reports Damage from Air Strikes
Elsewhere, Iran has reported extensive damage to its healthcare infrastructure amid ongoing conflict with the United States and Israel. Officials say nearly 240 attacks have affected hospitals and medical centers, including around 50 hospitals.
The strikes, which reportedly targeted areas in Tehran, have drawn international concern, with images of damaged medical facilities circulating widely in global media.
