Scientists believe this is because of the unique way the brain develops during adolescence and the strong emotions associated with early romantic relationships.
The Brain Creates Stronger Memories During Adolescence
According to Professor Catherine Loveday, a neuropsychologist at the University of Westminster, many first romantic relationships occur during adolescence—a period when the brain is especially effective at forming long-lasting memories.
"The brain has an exceptional ability to store emotionally significant experiences during this stage of life," she explains.
Events that happen for the first time and involve intense emotions—whether happiness, excitement, heartbreak, or disappointment—are more likely to become deeply embedded in memory.
Every time people recall those experiences, the brain strengthens the neural pathways connected to them, making the memories even more durable over time.
The Role of Hormones
First love is often accompanied by powerful emotional highs and lows.
During adolescence, the body produces increased levels of hormones such as estrogen and testosterone, which contribute to romantic attraction.
As a relationship develops, the brain releases several important neurotransmitters and hormones, including:
Dopamine, which creates feelings of pleasure and reward.
Serotonin, which influences mood and emotional well-being.
Oxytocin, often called the "bonding hormone," which strengthens feelings of trust, closeness, and attachment.

Professor Loveday describes first love as one of the most important relationship experiences in a person's life.
"It teaches us how to trust someone new, build intimacy, and create meaningful emotional connections," she says.
Can First Love Return?
Research suggests that first love sometimes returns years later.
In 1993, American psychologist Dr. Nancy Kalish studied hundreds of people who reconnected with their first loves after many years apart.
Many participants were single or had lost their spouses when they re-established contact.
Among those who reunited, many quickly restarted their relationships, and approximately 72% eventually married, according to the study.
The rise of the internet and social media has made reconnecting with former partners much easier than in previous decades.
A Love Rediscovered After 30 Years
One example is Kate and Gunther, who met while on holiday in Devon, England, in 1989.
Although they fell deeply in love, circumstances forced Gunther to return to Germany, and the couple eventually ended their relationship after two years.
Thirty years later, Kate found the letters Gunther had written to her. The memories came flooding back, prompting her to contact him through his family's business.
To her surprise, he replied.
After hours of conversation and an emotional reunion, the couple realized their feelings had never completely disappeared.
Gunther later proposed at the same hill they had climbed together three decades earlier, and the two eventually married.
