U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that a teenage lifeguard who rescued a young boy from powerful ocean waves in Santa Cruz, California, will be invited to the White House in recognition of his bravery.
The dramatic rescue took place at Seabright Beach over the weekend and quickly gained widespread attention on social media after a video of the incident went viral.
The footage shows the 16-year-old lifeguard holding tightly onto the child while shielding his head from crashing waves. Despite the dangerous surf, the teenager remained calm until another lifeguard arrived to assist. Together, they successfully brought the boy safely back to shore.
In a post on social media, President Trump praised the teenager's courage and announced plans to honor him at the White House.
"We will invite this heroic young man and his family to the White House. He may also bring the boy he rescued, and we will present him with the nation's highest civilian award. He is incredibly brave and truly deserves it," Trump wrote.
Trump's son, Eric Trump, also praised the rescue, saying the teenage lifeguard would receive one of the country's highest civilian honors in recognition of his heroic actions.
