Sudan’s military has announced that it has taken full control of a strategically important road linking the capital Khartoum with El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, following two days of intense fighting.
The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) said they had regained control of the approximately 350-kilometre road, which had been held by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, when Sudan’s civil war began.
A military spokesperson said that towns and villages located along the route had also been cleared of RSF fighters, who had reportedly withdrawn from the area.
The development comes as international organizations warn of a worsening humanitarian situation in El Obeid, where hundreds of thousands of people have been trapped amid ongoing attacks, including strikes involving drones allegedly carried out by the RSF.
The United Nations has warned of a possible humanitarian disaster in the region, while the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around 400,000 people have been killed and more than 14 million people displaced since the conflict began.
The fighting between Sudan’s military and the RSF has continued to cause widespread destruction, displacement, and a severe humanitarian crisis across the country.
