Russia Seeks Economic and Diplomatic Gains From Iran Conflict

 

Russia appears to be benefiting both economically and diplomatically from the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, according to analysts observing developments in the region.

Putin Positions Himself as Mediator

In recent days, Russian President Vladimir Putin has held telephone conversations with Iranian leaders while presenting Russia as a potential mediator in the crisis.

As Israeli and American strikes on Iran continue, Moscow has publicly called for an immediate de-escalation and a political solution to the conflict.

However, some observers say this position may be difficult to accept for many countries, particularly given Russia’s own military actions in Ukraine since the large-scale invasion launched in 2022.

At that time, the United Nations General Assembly condemned the invasion, describing it as a violation of the UN Charter.

Strategic Partnership With Iran

Moscow and Tehran have strengthened ties in recent years. The two countries signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership agreement, and Putin recently reaffirmed Russia’s continued support for Iran.

Despite this cooperation, analysts note that the agreement does not amount to a full mutual defense pact.

Instead, Russia has offered to help mediate the conflict, suggesting diplomatic contacts with Gulf leaders, Iranian officials, and other international actors.

Communication With Washington

Russia is also trying to maintain communication with Donald Trump, who currently leads the administration in United States.

Following a phone conversation between the two leaders, Trump said Putin had expressed interest in helping resolve the crisis.

However, Trump reportedly responded by suggesting that Russia should first focus on ending its war in Ukraine.

Despite the tension, the Kremlin appears eager to maintain a working relationship with Washington, which Moscow views as potentially beneficial for its broader geopolitical goals.

Rising Oil Prices Boost Russian Revenue

Beyond diplomacy, the conflict has also created economic opportunities for Russia.

Global oil prices surged during the escalation, briefly reaching around $120 per barrel before easing slightly. This rise is significant for Russia because its federal budget relies heavily on energy exports.

The Russian budget is based on an estimated oil price of about $59 per barrel, meaning higher global prices could significantly increase government revenue.

Such income could help Moscow continue financing its war effort in Ukraine.

Possible Sanctions Relief

Trump has also suggested that the United States might consider easing oil-related sanctions on certain countries to address supply shortages caused by the Iran conflict.

If sanctions on Russian oil exports were relaxed, analysts say Moscow could benefit even more economically.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that such a move would deal a “serious blow” to Ukraine’s position and urged Washington to maintain pressure on Russia.

Mixed Reactions in Russian Media

While the Kremlin has avoided openly criticizing Trump’s policies, some Russian media outlets have taken a harsher tone.

Certain pro-government newspapers suggested that the rising oil prices caused by the conflict could eventually pressure Western countries to reconsider sanctions against Russia.

Analysts say the situation highlights how global conflicts often create unexpected political and economic opportunities for other powers seeking to expand their influence.
