Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated sharply at the United Nations on Thursday after Washington warned that it was prepared to use all available options to confront the Iranian government, while Tehran cautioned that it would respond decisively to any act of aggression.
Speaking before the UN Security Council, US Ambassador Mike Waltz said President Donald Trump stood firmly with what he described as the “brave people of Iran,” amid continuing nationwide protests against Iran’s clerical leadership.
“President Trump has made it clear that all options are on the table to stop the slaughter,” Waltz told the council, which convened at Washington’s request. He accused Iran’s leadership of violently suppressing protesters and claimed the government was growing increasingly weak in the face of popular resistance.
Protests and Crackdown
Iran has been rocked by weeks of mass demonstrations, with human rights groups reporting thousands of deaths following a severe security crackdown. Iranian authorities dispute the scale of the casualties and argue that unrest has been fueled by foreign interference.
Although Trump has repeatedly threatened to intervene in support of protesters, he struck a more cautious tone on Thursday, saying he had been informed that the pace of killings had slowed and that there were no immediate plans for large-scale executions.
Despite that, the US ambassador emphasized that Washington was prepared to act if necessary. “The president is a man of action,” Waltz said, contrasting Trump’s approach with what he called prolonged inaction at the United Nations.
Iran Rejects US Claims
Iran’s Deputy UN Ambassador Gholamhossein Darzi rejected US accusations and denied that the protests represented a purely domestic uprising. He accused Washington of spreading misinformation and of playing a direct role in escalating unrest inside Iran.
“Iran does not seek escalation or confrontation,” Darzi told the Security Council. “However, any act of aggression — direct or indirect — will be met with a decisive, proportionate, and lawful response.”
He stressed that Iran’s position should not be interpreted as a threat, but rather as a statement grounded in international law and the country’s right to self-defense.
Russia and UN Call for Restraint
Russia strongly criticized the United States for convening the Security Council meeting. Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia accused Washington of attempting to justify interference in Iran’s internal affairs and warned against military action aimed at regime change.
“We urge the hot heads in Washington and other capitals to come to their senses,” Nebenzia said, cautioning that such actions could ignite a wider regional conflict.
The United Nations also appealed for calm. A senior UN official conveyed Secretary-General António Guterres’ call for “maximum restraint,” urging all sides to avoid steps that could lead to further loss of life or destabilize the Middle East.
Divided International Reactions
Several council members acknowledged the suffering of Iranian civilians while stopping short of endorsing military intervention. Denmark’s UN Ambassador Christina Markus Lassen said the voices of ordinary Iranians demanding a better life had gone unheard for too long, urging Tehran to respond through peaceful and political means.
As diplomatic rhetoric intensifies, uncertainty remains over Washington’s next move. US officials say President Trump has not yet reached a final decision, keeping diplomatic, economic, and military options under consideration.
For now, the confrontation at the UN underscores how Iran’s internal crisis is rapidly becoming a focal point of global tension, with the risk that miscalculation on either side could push the region toward a far more dangerous confrontation.
